Cycle Safety

May 11th 2014

Its been a month now since the discussions with the Cycling Champion and the council and we are both still waiting for the council to act on the road markings at the Patacake junction with Marmora/Malta Road.  We will not let go of this matter and it is another one of those times when being a councillor rather than the candidate and Romsey resident would be very useful.

During a recent canvass we were alerted to a dangerous area where Marmora Road forms a T junction/ cross road with Malta Road and the cycle pathway to Coleridge Road.  There are no give way markings on the road at this busy junction and through cycle route, so everyone sort of has right of way, and it has been reported that there have been several near misses between cars and bicycles.  I am no road safety expert but as a bike rider I do see that the lack of road marking could cause a confusion - particularly for traffic entering or exiting the part of Malta Road that goes to the children’s nursery.  I have contacted the County Council's cycling champion and there is a promise that signs and road markings will make the area safer.
