I am going to apply to be labour’s next candidate for Police and Crime Commissioner

A post that may shortly become Police and Crime and Fire and Prevention Commissioner

I believe that I am the person who is ideally suited to be chosen as Labour's candidate and then to win people's votes in the election to become PCC

I can make a difference.

Would you like to help me?

If elected I will

Listen to and represent the people who live in Cambridgeshire

Have the strategic vision to both support and hold to account the Chief Constable in building confidence in the police, promoting community safety, reducing crime and antisocial behaviour, determining local policing priorities and contributing to action on national priorities such as organised crime and prevention of terrorist activity.

Be a champion for our community.

Engage with the public and local communities and work to protect neighbourhood policing – a flagship Labour reform – which is being threatened by the scale of the Government’s cuts.

Commit to working in partnership with other criminal justice agencies, local government, voluntary agencies and community groups to strengthen community safety and to prevent crime.

Provide the skills to lead a dynamic, complex, forward-looking organisation, accountable to local people.

Offer a strategic lead on policing issues.

Never forget the values and ideals of the Labour Party.

Commit to building on Labour’s record falls in crime and action to tackle anti-social behaviour in our county.

I believe in the concept of the police as a citizen in uniform

Public service is in my heart

Early days with my parents

In brief:

I spent nearly 31 years serving as a firefighter

I am the son of a police officer

I then went to University to read Sociology for a first degree and to get a Phd which focussed on public service and masculine cultures.

I then wrote and led the social science public service degree at ARU (which mostly focussed on the police service and placed a particular emphasis on serving the public, beating crime, workplace cultures, masculinity and equality).

Since that time I have researched and advised on management, equality and public service cultures, both at home and abroad - my advice is always research based and to this element I bring the experience of having been a hands on firefighter for over 30 years.

Add this experience to the fact that

I am a city councillor in Cambridge

My success as a politician is strongly grounded in campaigning and meeting my constituents

I will make a difference by listening to

People's views on policing

The voice of police officers and staff at all levels

I know the price of service

I will improve communications

If the police cannot hear us

  • how can we support them?
  • how can they work for us?

Waiting for 101 - this service really needs to be sorted out

I will ensure the police know how to help victims of crime

Fenland police tweeted this picture  I would like to add

Red sky in the morning
